Gabriel Engle: The Life of Anton Bruckner
One of the earliest biographies of Anton Bruckner written in English was authored by Gabriel Engel (1892-1952). Engel was born in Hungary but was brought to New York City as a child. "The Life of Anton Bruckner" was published by the Roerich Museum Press in New York in 1931. It was published in collaboration with the Bruckner Society of America and was also printed within the Society's journal, "Chord and Discord" (Volume 2, No. 1).
Gabriel Engle: The Symphonies of Anton Bruckner
The Bruckner Society of America published this book in 1955 as a tribute to the late Gabriel Engel who died three years earlier It also marked the 25th anniversary of the Society's founding.
While the book does not get into the discussion of the first published versus the "original" editions, it does include a discussion of the String Quintet which many believe is a symphony with reduced instrumentation. It also introduces a grouping of the symphonies, which seen in hindsight, never received much acceptance.
